If you grew up in the shadow of the Y2K bug and still dream of cruising in an SLK with the top down, you’re not alone.
The Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart is launching a new special exhibition in April 2025 titled Youngtimer, spotlighting cars from the 1990s and 2000s — the decades when a generation of car enthusiasts fell in love with AMG badges, panoramic roofs, and DVD players behind the headrests.

According to Mercedes-Benz Group AG, the goal is to rekindle the childhood and teenage car passion — also known as dream potential. The museum will showcase 10 handpicked models from the era, staged with color, light, and plenty of visual flair.

Among the highlights of the exhibition are cars like the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR — originally built for the FIA GT Championship — as well as more everyday, yet still iconic, models such as the E-Class W210 and the first-generation M-Class SUV.
All have been chosen for their cultural and technological significance during a decade when mobile phones and MP3 players became just as essential as traction control and Xenon headlights.

As one might expect, the exhibition is also a nostalgic journey through lifestyle and pop culture:
Alongside the cars, period-specific items from the era are on display — everything from CD players to designer phone holders offer a glimpse back to a time when the car interior became a kind of personal domain.

Though the exhibition clearly taps into emotion, Mercedes-Benz also aims to provide a thoughtful perspective on the fascination with youngtimers — cars that are too new to be considered classics, yet too old to always be taken seriously.
But it is precisely in this transitional phase that a special kind of affection often arises — and that is what the exhibition seeks to highlight.

The exhibition at the Mercedes-Benz Museum opens in April 2025 and currently runs without a confirmed end date.
