In Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area, a new service is now live for a select group of employees: a ride-hailing program where vehicles are operated by Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology — under supervision.

The First Rides: 1,500 Trips and 15,000 Miles

So far, Tesla’s internal robotaxis have already completed more than 1,500 trips and logged over 15,000 miles. It’s not just a technical achievement; it’s a strategic necessity for a company currently battling declining sales and fierce competition from other EV manufacturers. Tesla urgently needs wins, and this project could be a crucial morale booster.

What Tesla Is Testing Behind the Scenes

According to Tesla, these test rides help not only train and validate the FSD network but also provide valuable feedback on app usage, vehicle allocation, mission control operations, and remote assistance capabilities. As Tesla puts it:
“This service helps us develop & validate FSD networks, the mobile app, vehicle allocation, mission control & remote assistance operations.”

Launching an internal Uber-style service with autonomous vehicles is an ambitious move, even by Tesla standards. The company hopes that lessons from these early trials can lay the foundation for a broader public rollout in the future.

A Welcome Progress During Challenging Times

At a time when Tesla’s stock price is volatile and vehicle sales are falling short of expectations, every initiative like this becomes even more critical. Tesla summarized the progress so far with the statement:
“We’ve completed over 1.5k trips & 15k miles of driving.”
It may not sound revolutionary just yet, but every mile counts when the future is at stake.

A Future Still Wide Open

Although the road to fully autonomous ride-hailing services is still long, this pilot program sends a clear signal: Tesla is not giving up. And in times marked by headwinds, belief in the future might just be the company’s most valuable asset.
