A jury in Miami has determined that electric car manufacturer Tesla is partially responsible for a fatal traffic accident in 2019, in which a 22-year-old woman lost her life and her boyfriend was severely injured. The accident occurred in Key Largo, Florida, and involved a Tesla Model S with autopilot activated.

According to the verdict, Tesla must pay a record-breaking fine and compensation totaling $243 million, most of which will go to the family of the deceased woman. The jury found that Tesla’s autopilot system failed in this situation and bears 33 percent of the responsibility, while the driver is held liable for the remainder.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced, according to Reuters, that the company will appeal the decision. The case has drawn significant attention, as Tesla is currently working to convince the public of the safety of self-driving vehicles and has plans for a major launch of a driverless taxi service in several U.S. cities.

Previously, U.S. authorities have investigated a series of crashes involving Tesla’s autopilot system, some of which were fatal. As a result, it was concluded that over two million Tesla vehicles on the American market required updates with improved safety features.

Safety experts have long called for better oversight and regulation of autopilot systems, especially regarding features that ensure the driver’s hands remain on the wheel when the vehicle is in autonomous mode. With this new verdict, the pressure on Tesla and similar companies may increase significantly, potentially changing the conditions for the entire self-driving car market.
