In the early hours of July 21, 2025, Russian air forces launched yet another large-scale missile and drone assault on Ukrainian cities. The attack triggered a rapid response from Poland, which—together with NATO allies—scrambled fighter jets and raised air defense systems to maximum alert.

Poland’s Operational Command announced on X that Polish F-16s and Swedish JAS 39 Gripens were deployed as a precaution to safeguard Polish airspace. At the same time, ground-based defense systems were placed on high alert across the country.

“These actions are preventive and designed to ensure public safety and border security, especially in areas close to the Ukrainian conflict zone,” the Operational Command stated. Authorities emphasized that the situation was being monitored around the clock and that all forces remained on standby to respond at a moment’s notice.

The Russian offensive involved strategic bombers such as the Tu-95MS and Tu-160, which fired missiles at multiple Ukrainian cities. In Kyiv, at least one person was killed and several buildings were set ablaze. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that emergency services were working in four city districts to contain the damage from the night’s bombardment.

In Ivano-Frankivsk, Mayor Ruslan Marcinkiw described the strike as the heaviest since the war began:
“This is the largest Russian attack the city has faced since the start of the invasion,” he said, according to Portalobronny.se.pl.

Kharkiv also endured a harrowing night, with numerous explosions confirmed by regional governor Oleh Syniehubov.

The NATO response and Poland’s heightened alert remained in place until 7:30 a.m. local time, when forces were stood down and returned to regular duties. Poland’s Operational Command stressed that no violations of Polish airspace had been detected and expressed gratitude for NATO’s swift support—a move they say underscores the vital importance of maintaining top-tier readiness in today’s security landscape.
