Polestar Doubles Down on Europe
With new models and an expansion into France, Polestar is aiming to secure continued European success after facing challenges in the US and China.
Polestar is riding a wave of explosive growth in Europe, with sales surging more than 80 percent in the first half of 2025. Fueling this momentum are its two latest SUVs – the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 – which have struck a chord with European drivers.
But the Swedish EV maker isn’t stopping there. It’s now setting its sights even higher with the upcoming Polestar 5, a sleek luxury sedan designed to go head-to-head with heavyweights like the Porsche Taycan and BMW i7.
“Europe is clearly our most important and fastest-growing market,” says CEO Michael Lohscheller. “This is now the main focus for Polestar’s future.”
Tariffs Take a Toll in the US
While Europe delivers record-breaking numbers, the picture across the Atlantic is far less rosy. Soaring import tariffs on Polestar’s China-built models have priced them out of reach for many American buyers. As a result, US sales tumbled nearly 25 percent in the first six months of 2025 alone.
With these headwinds, Polestar is shifting its focus to more promising terrain. European growth isn’t just an opportunity anymore—it’s a lifeline.

China Proves a Tough Nut to Crack
China, despite being Polestar’s manufacturing hub and home to its parent company, hasn’t lived up to expectations either. The brand’s distinctly Scandinavian image hasn’t fully resonated with Chinese consumers, leaving room for improvement in what should have been a home advantage.
This makes the strategic pivot to Europe all the more logical. For Lohscheller and his team, the continent represents the best shot at sustaining Polestar’s rapid ascent.
France in the Spotlight
A key pillar of this strategy is the expansion into France, Europe’s fourth-largest auto market. Polestar sees France as a gateway to deeper penetration across the region and a crucial step toward cementing its European ambitions.
With new models rolling out and fresh markets opening up, Polestar isn’t just participating in the European EV race—it’s out to win it. As competition with Porsche and BMW intensifies, early signs suggest the Swedish brand’s bold strategy is paying off.
