Do you drive a car with an automatic transmission? Here are five mistakes that can ruin your transmission – without you realizing it:

Neglecting to Check Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid keeps gears lubricated, cool, and clean. Too little or old fluid can lead to wear, overheating, and failure. Regularly check the level and color of the fluid (it should be red/pink, not dark or burnt) and service it every 30,000–60,000 miles.

Using the Wrong Transmission Fluid

There are many types—Dexron, Mercon, OEM variants—and they cannot be mixed. The wrong fluid wears down seals and can cause costly damage. Use only the type specified in your car’s manual.

Overheating

The transmission system fails at high temperatures: above 200 °F, the fluid deteriorates, and components age faster. Avoid towing heavy trailers, stop-start driving, and long periods at a standstill.

Shifting Gears While the Car is Moving

Switching from “Drive” to “Park” or “Reverse” without stopping can instantly damage gears and hydraulics. Never change gears without the car being fully stopped.

Losing Control When Coasting or Drifting in Neutral

It might seem like a way to save fuel, but letting the car coast in ‘N’ deprives you of engine braking and creates instability. Also, don’t drive through deep water—it can draw moisture-laden fluid into the transmission.
