Trump’s Golden Dome Moving Away from Musk

A public spat between U.S. President Donald Trump and Elon Musk has pushed the ambitious Golden Dome missile defense project to explore alternatives to SpaceX. Once the clear frontrunner to manage significant portions of the sprawling space-based shield, Musk’s company now faces stiff competition as the Trump administration courts new partners.

Golden Dome—conceptually similar to Israel’s Iron Dome but designed on a vastly larger and more complex scale—requires an extensive satellite network to monitor and protect huge areas of U.S. and allied territory. SpaceX seemed the obvious choice, given its track record of launching more than 9,000 Starlink satellites. But the fallout between Trump and Musk, which climaxed in a heated public exchange on June 5, has highlighted the risks of relying too heavily on a single private contractor.

One likely beneficiary of this shift is Jeff Bezos and Amazon’s Kuiper project. While Kuiper has so far launched only 78 of its planned 3,000 satellites, the Pentagon has reportedly approached Amazon about potential collaboration.

Bezos has acknowledged Kuiper’s dual-use potential. “There’s no question these satellite constellations have defense applications,” he said in an earlier statement.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon is also in talks with defense heavyweights Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin, both of which have signaled interest in contributing to Golden Dome. By diversifying satellite production and fostering competition, the Defense Department aims to mitigate risk—a strategy seen as key to the project’s success.

For SpaceX, this strategic shift doesn’t necessarily mean exclusion, but it could sharply reduce its role. “Every future launch will be competitively bid—we can’t afford to default to SpaceX alone,” a U.S. official confirmed.

The Golden Dome realignment underscores how political tensions at the highest level can ripple through multi-billion-dollar programs, reshaping the balance of power in the rapidly evolving space and defense industries.
