These 10 Supercars Were Scrapped Before They Hit the Road

Projects that never saw the light of day

Some cars are built, tested, and hit the streets. And then there are the others — the ones that stirred up hype, dreams, and headlines, but never made it past the drawing board or, at best, a few show-floor models. Here are 10 of the wildest supercars that were scrapped before production — and still haunt car nerds’ nightmares and fantasies to this day.

Lamborghini Estoque (2008)

A four-door Lamborghini? Yep — it was actually nearly production-ready. But the 2008 financial crisis threw a wrench into the plan, and the project never made it past a spectacular prototype.

Jaguar C-X75 (2010)

Created to be a hybrid supercar with gas turbines(!) and electric range. The design was James Bond-worthy (and actually appeared in Spectre), but a steep price tag and limited demand meant Jaguar never greenlit full production.

Volkswagen W12 Nardò (2001)

VW wanted to play in the supercar league and created this V12-powered dream, which even broke speed records. But in the end, they shelved it in favor of focusing on the Bugatti Veyron. The Nardò was archived and forgotten.

Yamaha OX99-11 (1992)

A Formula 1 engine in a street car — with a fighter jet-style cockpit. Yamaha aimed to break the sound barrier on public roads, but the finances fell apart before it could launch.

Ferrari Pinin (1980)

A Ferrari… sedan? That was the plan behind the “Pinin,” meant to be Maranello’s luxurious four-door. But Enzo Ferrari himself was never convinced, and the car remained a one-off concept.

Mazda Furai (2008)

One of the most extreme concept cars ever — based on Mazda’s Le Mans prototype racer. It was tested, photographed… and then burned to the ground during a test drive for Top Gear. The car died — and was never revived.

Lotus Esprit Concept (2010)

A modern rebirth of the Lotus classic with a V8 and dreams of challenging Ferrari. But Lotus’ financial situation didn’t add up, and the entire project was dropped.

Bertone Mantide (2009)

One of the boldest design experiments for a Corvette-based supercar. Created by the legendary Italian design house Bertone, but only a single unit was ever built.

TVR Typhon (2004)

TVR had big dreams for the Typhon — carbon fiber body, V8 power, and British brute force. But financial troubles and production chaos caused the project to collapse during testing.

BMW Nazca M12 (1991)

Designed by Italdesign and Giugiaro, and backed by BMW. It looked like something from the future — but only three working prototypes were ever built. BMW ultimately refused to approve it for production.
